Edit Fireworks images placed in Dreamweaver by launching Fireworks from Dreamweaver and editing the image. Edit GIFs and JPEGs from within Dreamweaver using a Fireworks source file or optimize the image without affecting the source.
Before you launch and edit, be sure to set Fireworks as an external editor in Dreamweaver.
To set Fireworks as an external editor for Dreamweaver 2:
1 | In Dreamweaver 2, choose Edit > Preferences > External Editors. |
2 | Set Fireworks as the Image Editor. |

To set Fireworks as an external editor for Dreamweaver 3:
1 | In Dreamweaver 3, choose Edit > Preferences > External Editors. |
2 | Select a file type to associate with Fireworks, GIF, JPEG, or PNG. |
3 | If Fireworks 3 does not already appear as the Editor, click the Add Editor button, browse to the Fireworks 3 application, and click Open. |
Fireworks 3 appears in the Editors list. | |
4 | If you want to make Firworks the primary editor for the selected image format, select Fireworks 3 and click Make Primary. |

To launch and edit Fireworks graphics that are placed in Dreamweaver 2 or 3:
1 | In Dreamweaver, choose Window > Properties to open the Properties inspector if necessary. |
2 | Launch Fireworks: |

Select an image and click Edit in the Properties inspector. |

In Dreamweaver 3 only, right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Macintosh) the image, and choose Edit With Fireworks 3. |
Dreamweaver launches Fireworks, if it is not already open. | |
3 | At the prompt to use an existing Fireworks document as the source of the graphic: |

Click Yes if a Fireworks source PNG file exists, browse to the PNG source file if necessary, and click OK. |

Click No if no Fireworks source file exists or if you only want to edit the bitmap image placed in Dreamweaver. |
4 | Edit the graphic in Fireworks. |
5 | Choose File > Update. |
When Dreamweaver launches and edits a graphic in Fireworks, Update replaces Save in the File menu. Choosing Update exports the image using the last Export Preview settings, replaces the GIF or JPEG used by Dreamweaver, and saves the PNG source file if a source file was selected. | |
6 | Close the Fireworks document. |
7 | Switch to Dreamweaver. |
The placed image updates to reflect the changes you made in Fireworks. | |

Note: Do not launch Dreamweaver to edit a sliced table or rollover that was created in Fireworks. Instead, edit the original Fireworks source file and choose File > Update HTML from within Fireworks to update the HTML and images in Dreamweaver.
